Methodology
In order to rank the top degree programs, we score programs based on six weighted factors.
- Top weight goes to hands-on practice, where we rewarded strong internships, real-world projects, and capstone assessments.
- Curriculum relevance is also considered for each program. This factor focuses on readiness for the job market. For example, the use of generative AI and natural language processing (plus the use of modern tools) for AI roles.
- We give affordability relatively high weighting. That said, programs judged to be delivering world-class quality are penalized less harshly for high tuition. We also make small regional adjustments to reward strong in-state value.
- Academic quality is another important consideration. Top marks go to institutions with impressive employer reputations and top-tier research.
- A small but significant factor in our rankings is degree focus. In other words, we credit programs with a clear and consistent curriculum dedicated to the focus area.
- Admissions is another minor factor. We do not unduly punish highly-selective institutions, but highly accessible programs get a slight edge. Credit is also given to practical elements like rolling admissions.
Note that the exact weights will vary depending on the degree type. For example, associate’s degree programs will get scored more on admissions and hands-on training than academic quality. While with a PhD, we would put more weight on academic quality.
Estimated tuition figures are based on published per-year or per-semester tuition costs, extrapolated across the full four-year degree.
