Earning a PhD in cybersecurity can open doors to careers in research, government, and executive-level security leadership positions.

Many of the top roles in the industry require advanced degrees, with the average cybersecurity PhD graduate earning an average annual salary of $172,000. Earning a doctorate in cyber security online is a flexible way for students to land these high-paying roles.

The Latest Data on Online Cybersecurity PhD Programs

We pulled together a set of 10 programs offering a doctorate in cybersecurity online to get insight into: cost, credits, admissions requirements, and CAE designations. The goal was to see the landscape of these program options in 2026.

CAE Designations

If there’s one credential online PhD programs in cybersecurity consistently lean on, it’s the NSA/DHS Center of Academic Excellence (CAE) designation.

It’s also worth noting which designations show up:

With 80% of programs holding it, the CAE-CD is by far the most common CAE designation.

The more specialized designations (Research and Operations) are much less common, and tend to be found with programs that position themselves as more technical or research-driven.

Tuition

Across the 10 online cybersecurity PhD programs that we analyzed:

This fairly large mean/median gap suggests a fairly tight cluster of programs in the $50K–$70K range, with a handful of significantly more expensive options pushing the average up. Programs like St. John’s ($127K+) and University of Tulsa ($111K+) stretch the upper end, while others sit much closer to the median.

Cost Per Credit

One thing that stood out to us is that that schools don’t price PhD in cybersecurity programs the same way. Although tuition is generally covered in PhD programs via an assistantship, it’s still a factor worth noting as you evaluate your options.

Only 2 of the 10 programs list separate in-state and out-of-state tuition. So we excluded them from this analysis.

The remaining 8 programs use a flat per-credit rate, regardless of residency. Among those programs, the average cost per credit was $1,275.

Program Length

Unlike pricing, program length is relatively consistent across online cybersecurity PhD programs:

Mean credits: 66
Median credits: 69

Most programs land in the 60–75 credit range, with a couple of outliers on either end (36 credits on the low side, 90 on the high end).

In short, you’re typically committing to a multi-year program with a similar academic load, regardless of where you enroll.

GRE Requirements

One of the more surprising findings: the GRE is almost irrelevant for online PhD cybersecurity programs.

This suggests that programs in this security space are prioritizing accessibility and professional background over standardized testing.

Online PhD in Cybersecurity Career Outlook, Earning Potential & Salary Data

A PhD in cybersecurity is typically useful for students who want to advance into senior roles. Unlike a BS in cybersecurity, a doctorate in cybersecurity is designed specifically for research, leadership, and government roles.

Common job titles for cybersecurity PhD graduates include:

However, many roles require different levels of past work experience.

For example, here’s a job listing from Cox Automotive for a Principal Cybersecurity Integrated Architect.

The position’s educational requirements vary by degree type:

PhD holders will also typically earn a higher salary in this role, as the exact salary depends on the candidate’s knowledge, skills, and abilities.

This is true for many roles in cybersecurity, including Chief Compliance Officers, Chief Security Officers, and Chief Scientists.

Zippia data shows that 19% of Chief Compliance Officers have a PhD, compared to 60% with a Bachelor’s and 15% with a Master’s. However, those who have a PhD earn 13.09% more than those with a master’s degree and 25.07% more than those with a bachelor’s degree.

Earning Potential

According to Payscale, cybersecurity PhD graduates earn an average annual salary of $172,000. Completing an online doctorate in cybersecurity is a direct path to this sort of salary level.

Cybersecurity researchers earn an average of $159,940 per year, according to Glassdoor.

Many cybersecurity PhD graduates who pursue research roles will gain research experience through their degree program. For example, George Washington University’s Doctor of Engineering in Cybersecurity Analytics program requires students to complete a 24-credit Praxis Research curriculum.

Based on Google Trends data, the demand for Security Researchers is skyrocketing, with search interest hitting at an all-time high in 2025.

Many of the world’s largest tech companies are hiring security researcher positions with above-average salaries. For example, NVIDIA is hiring an Offensive Security Researcher with a salary range of $224,000 – $425,500 a year.

This role requires 12+ years of work experience, an advanced degree, and relevant certifications.

The Programs.com team evaluated each online cybersecurity PhD program using a set of stringent criteria, including affordability, flexibility, and academic quality.

We prioritized schools that hold NSA/DHS Center of Academic Excellence (CAE) designations and provide clear career pathways through research labs, federal partnerships, or job placement data. Tuition costs, credit requirements, admissions policies, and accreditation status were also factored into the rankings.

1. CAE Designation (35%)

The National Security Agency (NSA) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) designate programs as Centers of Academic Excellence (CAE) in Cyber Defense (CAE-CD), Research (CAE-R), or Cyber Operations (CAE-CO). This indicates that the course material you see aligns with current national cybersecurity standards.

Programs were assigned points based on the number of CAE designations:

CAE designations indicate a program’s quality, rigor, and relevance to industry and government needs. Programs like Mississippi State University and Dakota State University had all three designations (CAE-CD, CAE-R, CAE-CO), and therefore scored highest.

This criterion ensures that students consider programs recognized for producing leaders in cyber defense, research, and operations. All data was verified through program websites and NSA’s CAE database.

2. Affordability (Total Tuition, 35%)

Total estimated tuition for out-of-state or equivalent rates, as online students often pay a flat rate regardless of residency.

Scored inversely proportional to total tuition, with the lowest tuition (Mississippi State University, $27,468) receiving 100 points and the highest (Naval Postgraduate School, $108,000) receiving 0 points. Programs in-between were scored accordingly.

Affordability is a critical factor for online learners, especially working professionals who may not qualify for in-state rates. Programs like University of the Cumberlands ($30,000) and California Intercontinental University ($32,700) scored highly due to their low tuition cost.

All tuition data was sourced from program websites and public sources.

3. Program Length (Credits, 20%)

The number of credits required to complete the program, reflecting the time commitment needed to obtain a desired degree.

Program length was scored inversely proportional to credits, with the fewest credits (Marymount University, 36) receiving 100 points and the highest (Walden University, up to 184 quarter credits) receiving 0 points.

Shorter programs, like Marymount’s 36-credit D.Sc., allow students to complete their doctorate faster, reducing both time and cost. This is particularly appealing for professionals balancing work and study, a key consideration for online PhD candidates.

All data sourced from program websites, converted to semester credits where necessary (e.g., quarter credits divided by 1.5).

4. GRE Requirement (10%)

Whether the program requires, makes optional, or waives the GRE for admission. We scored each school based on their specified requirements:

Waiving or making the GRE optional, as seen in programs like National University, reduces admissions barriers for non-traditional students, such as mid-career professionals, who are common in online PhD programs.

All GRE requirement information was verified through program admission pages.
