Schools That Limit or Allow AI

SchoolTypeRuleWhat the school saysSource
Babson CollegeCollegeLimited use“If you choose to use generative AI, we recommend that you use this tool to enhance your original work and not create it.”babson.edu
Bates CollegeCollegeLimited use“Don’t use AI to draft, generate, or rewrite any part of your application responses. That means no feeding AI an outline and asking AI to create a draft, no pasting AI-generated text into your application, and no asking AI to rework your writing into a more polished or different style.”bates.edu
Boston CollegeCollegeLimited use“Generative artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT may also serve as a resource, but must only be used as a guide; content must never be directly copied from AI or other sources.”bc.edu
Boston UniversityCollegeLimited use“If you opt to use these tools at any point while writing your essays, they should only be used to support your original ideas rather than to write your essays in their entirety.”bu.edu
Bowdoin CollegeCollegeLimited use“In these ways, AI can play a role similar to a teacher, counselor, or mentor. It can guide you, but it should not do the writing for you.”bowdoin.edu
Bucknell UniversityCollegeLimited use“We believe that these tools can help you generate ideas for your application, but ultimately everything you submit as part of your application to Bucknell should be your own. You should not copy and paste content into your application that you did not create.”bucknell.edu
California Institute of TechnologyCollegeLimited use“What are some examples of unethical uses of AI for Caltech admissions essays? Copying and pasting directly from an AI generator Relying on AI generated content to outline or draft an essay Replacing your unique voice and tone with AI generated content”caltech.edu

Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace UniversityLaw schoolLimited use“You may use AI tools to brainstorm ideas, check grammar, or get feedback on how to improve your writing. However, submitting a personal statement or writing sample that was written fully or in part by an AI tool as your own work is not allowed and will be considered plagiarism.”pace.edu

Georgetown University Law CenterLaw schoolLimited use“While you can (and should) receive and incorporate feedback on drafts, the only person who may be engaged in the actual writing is you. Friends, family members, advisors, etc. – whether real or artificial – are not applying to Georgetown Law – you are.”georgetown.edu

Macalester CollegeCollegeLimited use“If you decide to utilize programs like ChatGPT, treat them like a teacher—AI can help edit or organize pre-existing ideas, but ultimately, your writing should be your own. AI usage becomes problematic when it creates rather than refines text.”macalester.edu
Northwestern UniversityCollegeLimited use“Just as you wouldn’t ask another person to write your essays for you, we expect you won’t ask AI to do that work on your behalf.”northwestern.edu

University of Louisville Louis D. William & MaryCollegeLimited use“By submitting your application, you affirm that the materials submitted are your own original work – not primarily the product of AI.”wm.edu
Yale Law SchoolLaw schoolLimited use“Neither AI nor any other person should generate any written content for you. This includes substantial editing or taking specific text suggestions and using it instead of your own words.”yale.edu
Yale UniversityCollegeLimited use“Using an AI platform to review one’s grammar or spelling, or to seek general advice or topic suggestions at the start of the writing process does not constitute application fraud.”yale.edu

Princeton UniversityCollegeDiscourages“While it might be tempting to rely on these types of aides, here’s my two cents about why you should shy away from them when preparing your college essays. First and foremost, nothing generated by an AI tool will be as authentic and compelling as something you compose all on your own.”princeton.edu

194 of the 197 ABA-accredited law schools and the 100 most selective U.S. colleges. No published rule: the school’s admissions pages say nothing about applicants using AI. Source: Each school’s own admissions pages, checked October 2026.

How We Maintain This Tracker

We re-check every school’s admissions pages regularly and update this page when a school adds, changes or drops an AI-related admissions policy.

Each policy is quoted directly from the school’s own website and linked to the original source.

How We Track Admissions AI Rules

Schools Covered

The tracker covers 194 of the 197 law schools approved by the American Bar Association and the 100 U.S. colleges with the lowest admission rates for fall 2024, among colleges with at least 5,000 applicants (i.e. the most selective schools in the U.S.). Schools whose admissions websites block automated checks are left out of this analysis (for example, American University, Fordham and the University of Richmond).

What Counts as a Ban

A school is considered to “ban AI” when its admissions pages bar applicants from using AI to write their essays or other application content. Schools that allow only spelling and grammar checks also count as bans.

What Counts as Limited Use

A school allows limited use when its admissions pages let applicants use AI for help such as brainstorming, outlining, feedback or editing, but bar AI-written text in their essays or other application content.

Every policy comes from the school’s own website. Admission rates come from IPEDS, and the list of law schools comes from the American Bar Association.
